Disc golf has come a long way since its inception, with its roots tracing back to the early 1960s. Over the decades, the sport has grown tremendously, thanks in large part to the pioneering brands that helped shape its early days. Among the first companies to explore disc golf were the Disc Golf Association (DGA), Innova Champion Discs, Discraft, Wham-O, and Aerobie. Some of these brands are still in operation today, showcasing their enduring popularity and quality.

DGA, founded by the sport's creator "Steady" Ed Headrick, laid the groundwork for organized disc golf with the invention of the modern disc golf target. Innova Champion Discs and Discraft have been powerhouses in the industry, consistently producing top-tier discs that players love. While Wham-O and Aerobie might not be around in the world of modern disc golf, their contributions to the sport's development are undeniable.

In recent years, several newer companies have made significant impacts on the disc golf scene. Brands like Latitude 64, Discmania, Dynamic Discs, Kastaplast, and Prodigy have garnered strong followings. It's worth noting that some of these companies own or are closely affiliated with other brands, creating a tangled web of interconnectivity.

Who owns who?

Latitude 64, Dynamic Discs, and Westside Discs form "Trilogy" and are a part of House of Discs, along with Kastaplast and Discmania.

Discmania discs used to be produced by Innova, then they were briefly manufactured in-house, and now are produced in Latitude 64 factories.

MVP Disc Sports produces its own discs as well as product for its sub brands Axiom and Streamline. The company also produces discs for Thought Space Athletics.

Innova Champion Discs is an independent company that produces its own discs in addition to the Infinite Discs lineup.

Prodigy is an independent company that also produces its own line of discs.

Choosing the Best Disc Golf Brands

When it comes to buying your disc golf gear, we know that you want some kind of assurance that your money is well spent on reliable and high-performing products.

Choosing the best disc golf brand is no easy feat, as there are many factors to consider. In fact, there’s probably no air-tight way to do it. However, we’ve made an attempt at it, at least with the fail case of demonstrating how different brands stack up in various categories.

For this article, we’ve highlighted high-performing brands across several categories: top-selling, highest-reviewed, most sponsorships, and most liked by players.

To compile these rankings, we consulted the following:

Top-Selling Disc Golf Brands

Popularity and sales performance are key indicators of a brand's success. By analyzing the top-selling lists from various sources, we can identify which brands consistently produce discs that players are eager to buy. Simply put, money talks as one way of determining a quality brand.

To compile this list, we counted how many times a disc from each brand appeared in the top-selling lists that we identified above. If a disc appeared multiple times across different lists, it was counted each time. So, for example, if the Innova Leopard was on each of the top-selling lists from Infinite Discs, Gotta Go Gotta Throw, and DiscSport, it was counted three times for the Innova brand.

Here are the results:

1.) Innova: 51

2.) Discraft: 35

T3.) Discmania & MVP/Axiom: 20

T4.) Kastaplast & Latitude 64: 18

5.) Infinite Discs: 10

T6.) Westside, Dynamic Discs, & Prodigy: 2

Innova is significantly ahead of the pack with their discs appearing 51 times across the lists we consulted. They were followed by Discraft with 35 and Discmania and MVP/Axiom tied with 20.

Highest-Reviewed Disc Golf Brands

While sales figures are important, it’s also important to consult the reviews of those who use them. The discs that sell the most can sometimes be a product of how well they are marketed, but may not live up to their hype in the end. That’s why we also wanted to consult lists of the highest-reviewed discs. This can help us determine which brands consistently deliver high-quality products that meet players' expectations. For this section we consulted, Infinite Discs Highest Rated Discs of All Time (U.S.) and DiscSport.com’s Best Rated List (Europe)

In the same way we did for the previous section, to compile our list of highest-reviewed brands, we looked at how often a disc from each brand appeared in top-reviewed lists. Again, if a brand’s disc appeared in both lists, it was counted twice for that brand. Here are the results:

1.) Innova: 33

2.) Discraft: 17

3.) Kastaplast: 16

4.) Latitude 64: 12

5.) Dynamic Discs: 10

6.) Infinite: 5

7.) Discmania: 3

8.) MVP/Axiom: 2

T9.) Westside & Gateway: 1

Once again, Innova tops the list with 33 mentions, showing that their discs are not only popular but also well-loved by players. Discraft ranks well again in this category. While not performing highly in the top-selling list, Kastaplast makes a formidable appearance in our highest-rated list with 16 mentions, showing their products are well-liked by players.

Highest-reviewed disc golf brands

Disc Golf Brands with the Most Sponsorships

Sponsorships are a crucial aspect of a brand's presence and influence in the sport. By sponsoring professional players, brands can increase their visibility and credibility. Sponsorship of professional players also goes a long way in growing the sport. Players who use sponsored discs in tournaments help to promote the brand to a wider audience. Having professionals use their discs, also proves that a brand’s product performs well at the highest levels. For this list, we consulted Ultiworld’s Active Contracts Tracker.

Here’s how the brands rank based on the number of active touring pros they sponsor:

1.) Innova: 24

2.) Discraft: 19

3.) Latitude 64: 15

4.) Discmania: 12

5.) DGA: 10

T6.) Lone Star, MVP/Axiom, & Thought Space Athletics: 7

7.) Prodigy: 6

8.) Infinite Discs: 4

Innova once again leads with 24 sponsored pros, followed by Discraft with 19 and Latitude 64 with 15. These brands have invested heavily in supporting professional players, further solidifying their reputation in the sport.

Keep in mind that how many professionals a brand can sponsor is a result of the size of their company and budget. This data alone doesn’t give the whole picture of how good a brand is, but it’s important to consider for the reasons listed above.

Most-Liked Disc Golf Brands

While this category is similar to the highest-reviewed category, this survey collected data on players’ impressions of various brands in general, rather than on a disc they produce.

We used UDisc’s Best Disc Golf Disc Brands According To Everyday Players survey to collect this data.

UDisc asked players to rank brands according to a few main categories. Here are the categories and UDisc’s results:

For example, 1st place finish in one of the above categories was worth 5 points, 2nd place was worth 4 points, and so on down to 1 point for 5th place.

Here are our final rankings using the UDisc survey data:

T1.) Kastaplast & MVP/Axiom: 14 points

2.) Latitude 64: 12 points

T3.) Discraft & Innova: 6 points

Analyzing the Top Disc Golf Brands

Now that we have examined the top-selling, highest-reviewed, most-sponsored, and most-liked disc golf brands, we’re going to make a foolish attempt at making a master list.

I want to reiterate that it’s a really hard thing to make any kind of definitive list of which disc golf brands are the best. We also realize that the data we consulted in this article is far from exhaustive.

However, I hope the various sub-lists here have helped you decide which brands you’d like to spend your hard-earned money on based on which attributes are most important to you.

That being said, everybody loves a top 10 list, so we’ve used what data we have to take a stab at it. What we’ve done here is the same method we used when analyzing the UDisc survey of most-liked brands.

In all of our lists, we listed the top 10 brands (except in the UDisc list where only nine brands were available).

Because they are lists of 10, a first place finish is worth 10 points, a 2nd place finish is worth nine points, and so on down to a 10th place finish being worth one point. If a brand ties in a particular list, each of those brands receives the points allocated for their position. For example, Lone Star, MVP/Axiom, & Thought Space Athletics are tied for 6th place in the list of Brands with the Most Sponsorships. In this case, each brand receives five points.

Here we go:

#10 - Westside Discs

(12 points)

Westside Discs tied for 6th place in both the Top-Selling List and the Most-Liked List, making it a strong contender. Its most popular disc is the Westside Harp, an overstable approach disc.

#9 - Infinite Discs

(14 points)

Like we mentioned before, Infinite molds are produced by Innova, which featured prominent in all the lists we presented here today. Their unique ancient Egypt-inspired branding appeals to many players.

#8 - Prodigy

(15 points)

Prodigy’s best performance in the data we used in this article was in the Top-Selling and Most-Liked lists, proving not only are people fond of the brand, but they are willing to fork over their hard-earned cash for Prodigy’s products.

#7 - Dynamic Discs

(18 points)

Dynamic Discs, part of the Trilogy sub-brand, is appreciated for its consistent quality and edgy crime-, police-, and war-themed designs. While not always at the top of the lists, their steady performance across categories shows they are a reliable choice.

#6 - Discmania

(24 points)

Discmania's strategic partnerships and innovative discs have made them a prominent player. Their strong presence in sales and sponsorships demonstrates their influence in the sport.  After recently signing the #1 player in the world, Gannon Buhr, Discmania’s performance can only be assumed to be on the way up.

#5 - Kastaplast

(25 points)

Kastaplast is highly regarded for the quality of their discs, especially in terms of plastic and consistency. Despite not being as prominent in sponsorships, their high rankings in reviews and player opinions demonstrate their strong reputation.

#4 - MVP/Axiom

(26 points)

MVP's unique gyro technology and quality discs have earned them a dedicated following (the Gyronauts) and this is proven by their sales performance. Their strong presence in player opinions also highlights the quality of this brand.

 #3 - Latitude 64

(31 points)

Latitude 64 has made a significant impact on the sport, particularly in Europe. Their innovative designs and strong player support have earned them high marks across multiple categories. Being the manufacturer all of the brands under the House of Discs umbrella (Latitude 64, Dynamic Discs, Kastaplast, Discmania, Westside Discs) clearly gives them an advantage when it comes to consistently producing high-quality discs.

 #2 - Discraft

(35 points)

One of the longest-standing brands, Discraft is another powerhouse in the disc golf world, performing exceptionally well in sales, reviews, and sponsorships. Their high-quality discs and strong player support make them a top choice for many disc golfers.

#1 - Innova

(38 points)

A pioneer company in disc golf, Innova clearly stands out as the most dominant brand, consistently ranking at the top in sales, reviews, and sponsorships.
